State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology

The laboratory can be traced back in 1999, and was established by emerging the following 4 labs: Wheat Cultivation Physiology and Genetic Improvement Lab supported by State Agricultural Ministry: Plant Molecular Biology Lab, Pomology Lab and Plant Genetic Engineering Lab sponsored by Shandong Provincial Government. In April, 2007, it was permitted by State Ministry of Science and Technology to develop into the State Key Laboratory of Crop Biology.

The Lab is located in the campus of Shandong Agricultural University, at the food of beautiful Mount Tai, eastern China’s Shandong Province.

Shandong is one of the largest agricultural provinces in China. It belongs to the lower range of Yellow River, Huai River and Hai River, and has big characters for crop production of this area. Its wheat, maize, apple and vegetable production and quantity of international trade remain on the top of the nation. Three research areas and focused fields of the Lab are created in response to the nation’s demand in crop production, namely:

  1. Crop Physiology and Ecology
    1. Wheat Physiology and Ecology
    2. Maize Physiology and Ecology
    3. Facility Crop Physiology and Ecology
    4. Crop Phytosynthesis and Stress Physiology

  1. Crop Molecular Biology
    1. Molecular Basis of Crop Development
    2. Genetic Engineering of Crop Disease Resistance
    3. Crop Gene Expression and Regulation
  1. Crop Germplasm Creation and Variety Improvement
    1. Crop Germplasm Creation
    2. Crop High Yield and Quality Improvement
    3. Crop Germplasm and Variety Evaluation

Ministerial-level Key Laboratory of Wheat Cultivation Physiology and Genetic Improvement
Laboratory of Wheat Cultivation Physiology and Genetic Improvement is the key laboratory supported by the State Agricultural Ministry. There are four research directions of this key laboratory: wheat physiology & bionomics, wheat modern integrative cultivation technology, theory & technology of wheat genetic breeding, controlling and testing technology of wheat quality. Since 1992, it has obtained one First Award of National Technological Invention Prize, three Second Awards of National Scientific & Technological Advance Prize and many other Provincial & Ministerial Awards. The laboratory has chosen to breed eight new wheat species, which has been examined and approved by Shandong province. In addition, the laboratory has undertaken lots of National “863” Projects, National Natural Science Fund of China and Provincial & Ministerial Scientific & Research Projects. In order to strengthen academic exchange, the laboratory has set up 27 opening projects.
The laboratory presently has 30 researchers, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, six Ph. D. supervisors, 13 professors and ten associate professors. In recent ten years, the laboratory has cultivated 12 postdoctorals, 36 doctors and 76 masters, and it has become the one of the modern research bases of wheat, cultivation bases of high level researchers and academic centers in China.
